Johanna Schall may be Brecht's grand-daughter, but she's forging her own path February 02, 2008 Richard Ouzounian Theatre Critic
In theatre, as in horseracing, pedigree counts.
No wonder Johanna Schall seems like a champion.
The woman who's just directed the U of T's University College Drama Program production of /The Robbers/ by Friedrich Schiller comes from one of the finest theatrical families of modern times.
Her grandfather was the legendary playwright Bertolt Brecht, her grandmother Helene Weigel originated the role of Mother Courage, her mother, Barbara Brecht-Schall, ran the Berliner Ensemble for many years after Brecht's death and her father was the iconic German actor Ekkehard Schall, whose performances as Arturo Ui and Coriolan are the stuff of legend.
