Purely by happenstance I picked up a collection of
everybody's favorite enlightened autocrat Catherine
the Great's writings today -- several of her plays,
Notes on a History of Russia, Notes on Governance, and
some of her correspondence with Voltaire, among other
things. It's not half bad Enlgightenment-era stuff,
and just for shits and giggles I decided to translate
some of it, even though it was written originally
mostly in French and my copy is Russian. So anybody
who is interested in this sort of stuff, let me know.
It's amazing what you can find in Russian bookstores.
I almost bought a copy of Tamerlane's autobiography. I
didn't even know he was literate.
