Buy 'em at retail. The royalty is the same regardless of the store, as long as it's a first sale. Buying used on Amazon - authors no like, because the book is either a review copy or has already been bought. If the author has a store set up at Amazon or Powell's, s/ he'll get a cut in addition to the royalty. Sometimes authors sell copies on their own, which would mean even more cash, but there are dignity issues involved there.
