Don't know what you mean by conventional candidate, Robert, but his foreign policy views are unconventional in relation to McCain's and Clinton's (which represent the recent acceptance of Bush doctrines by the DLC). You say that Obama is not a social movement candidate, but that is only because you can't see that he is the only statesperson responding in any meaningful way to global civil society in which there are peace and ecology and human rights movements. I think your dismissive criticism of Obama's activism is dangerous as it has not been coupled with any recognition of the great importance of his electoral victory. I submitted an article by Jha and wrote a couple of posts on his differences with Clinton, but I don't see your response. It seems that you are part of the ultra leftist tendency on this list that always sees itself above the fray or in mythical identification with some imagined activist community. But what this stance represents is disinterest in the fate of the world. I do not exaggerate.
