Racism -- the various isms that leftists are trying to criticize, expose, and dismantle -- are *also* structural.

What that means is that you have to look at the tacit, normative rules that structure social institutions. It's in those tacit norms that structural racism operates. We don't typically see them precisely because we think of them as _normal_. And that's why the folks at BAR aren't going to give two shits about white folks who are no longer personally racist. Because their no longer personally racist behavior and thoughts ain't gonna do much about the kind of racism they're talking about.

take the Horatio Alger dewd's comments in the story B just forwarded. There are two kinds of racism operating there.

^^^^^ CB: Yes, racism is structural, so the question for anti-racist activists is how to change the structure. The "structure" is not a building or other non-human thing. The "structure" in this case is a social constructed and interconnected mass of _individual_ humans, and their consciousness. Structural change is change in mass consciousness ( and no, that is not idealism). Large numbers of white individuals taking an important symbolic act like voting for a Black person for president _is_ structural change or is a sign of potential structural change, mass consciousness change.
