In the U.S., "You are liberal" means your policies are unpopular and not supported by a majority. In fact liberal policies are supported by majorities. So you can react by saying "yeah I'm a liberal and I'm going to down in glorious defeat," or you can say my policies are popular and good, so eff your labels.
