I admit that the Lamont campaign was certainly limited in what
it would do for political progress, and was therefore replete with
wasted energy, but was it really pointless?

Democrats in the Senate surely could count more on Ben Nelson
(of Nebraska) as their 51st vote had Lamont won than they can
now on Lieberman.
