The Conference Board has a groovy database on employment, population,
and productivity. Here are some stats on Chinese employment and
population growth (average annual rate; the col marked "ratio" is
employment growth divided by population growth):
empl pop ratio
1950s 3.0% 2.0% 151.0%
1960s 2.6% 2.1% 127.4%
1970s 2.1% 1.8% 114.3%
1980s 2.8% 1.5% 190.6%
1990s 1.1% 1.1% 105.0%
2000s 1.0% 0.6% 153.8%
Patrick's view of a shrinking Chinese labor market is hard to support
with actually existing stats, though perhaps he has some better ones.
