They called Lenin "Vozhd" too. The word means "leader," as in "Lenin -- vechnyi vozhd mirogogo proletariata" (Lenin is the eternal leader of the word proletariat). "Boss" makes Stalin sound like a mafia don (which in a sense he was), which is probably why that word is often used in English.
