I suspect the meaning varies in different social situations. I've been
called "intense" because I don't "lighten up" and "have fun". (Given
the choice between "partying" and sitting in the tub reading Capital
Vol. III (yeah, even III), I'm going for Capital every time. This
passes for "intense" in my neck of the woods.)
