The Alhambra Decree that expelled Jews from Castile and Aragon in 1492 was an indication of the survival (particularly in Aragon) of the "open" Middle Ages (v., e.g., Friedrich Heer, Europäische Geistesgeschichte) in the era of intellectual shutting-down (and the rise of capitalism) that paradoxically came to be called "the Renaissance." More backward areas had taken care of the matter long before (e.g., England 1290). --CGE
