I once only half-flippantly said that Marx's Marxism consisted of
commodity fetishism and the historicity of capitalism. That actually is
fairly close.

What he recognized (here was the importance of Hegel) was that
capitalism, unlike any other social system, past and we hope future, was
a WHOLE, interconected in a completely new way. That is why the Hegelian
premise, The Truth is the Whole, is so central. The various specific
theses in _Capital_ (surplus value, commodity fetishsm,
productive/unproductive labor, circuits of capital, critique of the
Trinity Formula, abstract labor, relative surplus value) merely
(merely!) explicate this wholeness, this infintite inter-connectiveness,
of capitalism. THAT recognition was unique to Marx.
