Straight monkey is going to get more action, but as long as lesbian monkey gets at least some hetero monkey love, her genes are going to be passed on and crop up from time to time, resulting in future lesbian monkeys.

^^^^ CB: Correct, but in terms of the "bell curves" the lesbian monkeys are going to have a much larger number who don't get any hetero-sex at all. They will gradually over the long run be selected against. Just a relatively small difference , i.e. small differential fertility, causes one type to be selected for and the other to be selected against. This small difference resulting in the selection for and against is how differential fertility works.

^^^ Somebody who knows more about this sort of thing than I can correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK animals aren't really interested in members of the opposite sex as such, but by the pheromones, mating display, etc. A male dog gets the hots for a female not because she's female, but because she's emitting the right signals during the period she's in heat.

^^^^ CB: Well, yea , but since only females emit pheromones being attracted to the phermones _is_ being attracted to her because she is female. You describe it exactly correctly , but your description makes the point of heterosexual instinct. Males being attracted to something only females emit is heterosexual instinct. The females are instinctively receptive/attracted to the males as well.

By the way, with non-human species there is no problem of cultural determinations confusing things. There really is no doubt that non-human species that reproduce by sex have heterosexual instincts.
