The most funny of this piece of uninformed conservative bullshit - almost every historic statement is false - is the fact, that far rightwing conservatives in Germany tell the same story with a different hero: They see the US as fighting for Stalin. No problem for Buchanan is that he repeats the old western proposal to Hitler, Nazigermany should take the countries in the east as their colonial empire, from Poland to the Ural Mountains, the idea of Munich appeasement 1938. And no problem for Buchanan is either, that he does not even mention France.
Pity only, that in fact Nazigermany was quite early planning the ongoing attack trough the Caucasus and trough El Alamein towards Iraq, Iran and eventually India, the cornerstone of the Britsh Empire.
To resume: Surely Winston Churchill was as much an anticommunist conservative as Buchanan, but he was an educated politician for the british Empire, whereas Buchanan ist a example for the old truth:
"Power is the chance never have to learn any more." - and a quite a few take this chance.
