Central Europe is beginning to shift to a renewable energy economy. I think the latest figures are 14% of Germany's electricity comes from renewables, mostly windpower - up from 3.5% as of 1995 or so. Japan has a terrific mass transit system, and Japanese consumers are recycling more and consuming fewer cars.
Of course, the entire planet needs to move to some semblance of ecological sanity, I was just sketching with the proverbial broad brush.
