[lbo-talk] NYT on SEIU-CNA fight

The SEIU-CNA fight in Ohio should not be viewed in isolation. There is also the story of SEIU meddling in the Puerto Rico Teachers union.

At the same time, there are internal difficulties within the union itself. Sometime back I posted an article to this list regarding complaints by California SEIU leader Sal Rosselli, who resigned from a key union position and has formed an opposition grouping. There are other opposition groupings as well within the SEIU.

The point is that there are serious problems with the leadership of Stern and those around him. Does that mean SEIU is a bad union or undemocratic? I certainly don't think so. I admire much of the work that they do, but they could do a better job. When criticism is silenced and dissidents are purged from organized labor, the ultimate outcome is never a good one. The fate of the UAW is one example, something we all hope the SEIU can avoid. SR
