The problem is that people are often forced to. M$ Money includes the ability to connect to banks via the Internet. But when you buy the software it comes with a timebomb that breaks the online functionality after a set period. To get it to work again, M$ expects you to buy the most recent version.
Which won't run under older OSes, so you end up needing to upgrade that.
Which is of course more bloated, so you need to buy a new computer.
I just went through this with M$ Money and it was incredibly irritating. A perfectly functioning system was rendered useless and I had to buy a new copy *AND* a new OS to get it working again. Which of course now runs more slowly.
The perfect consumer for M$ is someone who buys a new system every 24-30 months. Since most of us don't want to do that, or can't afford to, M$ will force us to.
