Marx thought capitalism was a form of progress, didn't he? Anyway, whether a change is sudden or gradual is relative to your time frame.
I think this suddenness obsession is part of Carrol's secularized form of Calvinism. It is the moment in which we are changed, in the twinkling of an eye.
