Before nineteenth century Britons heard the phrase Uncle Tom to describe a collaborator with the oppressor, there was another name for it.
In Elizabeth Gaskell's novel North and South there is a non-racial version of the outsider who sucks up to power, in the character who turns from mill-hand to become mill-owner. And what does Gaskell call her turncoat character? John Thornton
