Here we don't have to speculate.  Prop. 22 preventing recognition of same-sex marriage was adopted in 2000 in California with a 61.4% to 38.6% vote.  So the hidden story is lots of progress.  

And, as a reminder, the Blacks make up 6.7% of the population of California.
