Yeah, in the midst of a presidential elections when the two Official candidates have formed a union sacrée behind the Bush-Paulson giveaway, and the finance-capital apologists of left and right are spreading hysteria about the dreadful consequences for the workers of the depression that will strike them if this giveaway is not approved at gunpoint (never, ever, mentioning that in the "Great Depression" real wages actually increased and enormous improvements in infrastructure were made possible by the massive availability of unemployed workers and capital equipment), a push-poll from Gallup finds nearly half--nearly half!!--the public (after a Jack Benny moment) willing to hand over the wallet.

The real groundswell of mass (smeared as "populist") opposition was the nearly unanimous wave of e-mails and phone calls to congressional offices denouncing the giveaway.
