What's the cut-off between "modern farming" and "natural farming"? Food canning dates from the 18th century. Patricia Limerick begins Legacy of Conquest, her best known book about the American West, with a story told by Nannie Alderson who lived in Wyoming in the 1880s. Alderson said "everyone lived out of cans" and outside every farm was a big mound of empty cans.
