I guess I'll say something controversial. In my opinion, abortion and sex regulation in the US of the last 50 years, and longer, is ultimately rooted in racism ( in the rightwing sector of the ruling class) and the fear of the loss of the white " race" ( their concept; not ours). They want to control women's bodies, but more specifically they want to control white women's bodies to make sure that they keep having babies. They don't like the trend in Europe and America of falling birth rates _of whites_. In my opinion, this ideology is actually the main material aspect behind anti-gay "thinking/religion" , in that gayness is overall, for purposes of population regulation, a form of birth control ; I know not 100%; LGBT people have children; just it would seem likely "statistically", if you are trying to increase a population's birth rate, you would discourage homosexuality. So, in the US , some powers that be are against white people being gay, specifically. But of course, they can't just come right out and say it that way.
This also underlies sentiment against mixed unions, as in the US ideology any proportion of non-white "blood" makes a person non-white. So, mixed unions cut the white birthrate.
This thinking is not conscious for the mass of so-called social conservatives. They "think" in terms of religion, sin, God, etc. It in the minds of the Straussian- type racist puppeteers , trying to "preserve" the white "race".
So, it is trying to preserve the status quo like Plato (?) , but we can be more specific about the status quo sought to be preserved.
Population control by race has been a very important factor throughout US history, starting with the need to keep the African slave population as substantially less than the European population.
Secretly, the racist sector of the rulers are glad that Palin's daughter is pregnant, and they want her to have more , so they are glad she got started early.

People are going to fuck! From a conservative perspective that in itself is simply an uninteresting fact. What is important is that "anti-social" behavior not be given formal public approval. A very old political principle.
So their principles and social goals are wrong! So build opposition for those principles and goals. But this is bad politics and intellectually sloppy to keep harping on their personal hypocrisy etc. In fact I am more offended by the pompous moralizing on this list than I am by Palin. She's the enemy. Leftists are supposed to know better.
