My guess is it wouldn't be a long, dark night -- more like a brief,
violent implosion, the socio-economic equivalent of the Tunguska impact.

The MacChurian Candidate (to paraphrase the 1962 Frankenheimer film) is
the final suicide mission of petro-fundamentalism. The gun is locked and
loaded. If the US electorate pulls the trigger in one final bout of
imperial delirium tremens, the Banks of China and Russia stop buying US
Treasuries.

Game over.

That's why I think Obama will pull it off - his paymasters on Wall Street
are running scared.
