The GOP has a long history of nominating candidates for the White House who either were dopes or pretended to be. Eisenhower, who was no dope at all (as one would expect of the successful Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe) as president did his best to impersonate one to much acclaim by the Republican base. Then there is Dubya, who for years was beloved, in part because he did such a good job of convincing people he was a dope.
This sort of thing appeals to the anti-intellectualism of the GOP electorate. This is kind of thing that was up Richard Hofstadter's alley.
