You must be very young or have a poor memory.
To say "that's not how it was.... until the present millennium" is to
completely misunderstand the history of homeownership in the US.
People have considered their mortgages this way for some time.
People used to have parties to celebrate the end of their mortgage
payments and burn their mortgage paperwork.
The only difference is that the landlord can come over and tell you to
clean some shit and forbid you to put in a new door between rooms and
the bankers don't do that.
