[lbo-talk] Presidential debate

This thing is still going on, but I am totally fed up with it.  What a farce - both candidates pandering to the worst prejudices littering the Amerikan mind.  I did not expect much to begin with, but this was far worse than expected.  I hoped that Obama could rise above this shit and propose a new vision of foreign policy, but instead he went tit for tat with the xenophobic warmongering shit spewed by Mac Churian.  Mac Churian sounded like a reptile spewing venom in a sugary sweet voice, but I am afraid that he connected better with the Amerikan people.  Obama was unable to transcend that and offer something qualitatively different - he was either on the defensive or tried to out-Repug the Repugs, but he failed on both counts.

How depressing.  Unfortunately, this is indicative of how shitty the public deiscourse in this country have become.   Wojtek

--------------------------------------------------------------- "When a candidate for public office faces the voters he does not face men of sense; he faces a mob of men whose chief distinguishing mark is the fact that they are quite incapable of weighing ideas, or even of comprehending any save the most elemental — men whose whole thinking is done in terms of emotion, and whose dominant emotion is dread of what they cannot understand. So confronted, the candidate must either bark with the pack or be lost. [...] All the odds are on the man who is, intrinsically, the most devious and mediocre — the man who can most adeptly disperse the notion that his mind is a virtual vacuum. The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men." - HL Mencken ----------------------------------------------------------------
