Oh gawd yes. Paul Newman was an old school Hollywood lefty. He was one of 
Gore Vidal's best friends. When Vidal and Buckley clashed in Chicago on ABC 
in '68, Newman used to hang with both after the broadcasts. After the 
infamous "Crypto/Nazi--Now listen you queer" exchange, Newman went to 
Buckley's trailer, drank Buckley's beer, and castigated him for 
personalizing the debate.

"But, he called me a Nazi," complained Buckley.

Newman replied that that was a political attack. Calling Vidal a queer on 
national TV was personal. Buckley sulked.

Speaking of '68 Chicago, do watch "Chicago 10." It blends animation with 
stock footage and news video. Very entertaining.
