Again, Carrol gives us another anti-intellectual aphorism to add to his Little Red Book. Basically, we should ignore the wankish fellows who do actual research and see what makes sense economically, what's politically feasible, and what from a social policy standpoint, actually works in improving people's lives. Instead, we're compelled, by a Puritanical moral fervor that dare not recognize itself, to engage ourselves in mindless activism regardless of means or ends.

I find myself agreeing with the Slovenian charlatan Zizek when he says "Don't just do something - Talk!". In this period of left quiescence, which is across the board, and not merely a characteristic of so-called imperialist countries, but also typical of the global investor's menagerie of emerging markets, nothing could make more sense than to figure out what we want, how we want it, and in what way we're going to achieve it. Because, if there's any future for a new old left, it's a far off gee whiz future of Ken MacLeod and Iain M. Banks. Perhaps the socialists of that distant time will be rummaging amongst our papers and mailing list archives someday, when they rediscover our lost economic and philosophic manuscripts.
