Just a note. Tillotima Rajan (who is an unapologetic deconstructinist)
argues that the coinage of "theory" was what amounted
to a ruse by the French thinkers of the '60s to deny the heritage of
Sartre by pretending they were doing "thoery" instead of "philosophy."
She also argues that they completely misunderstood the relation between
Sartre and Heidegger: they claimed Saratre misunderstood Heidegger when
hin fact Sartre simply _disagreed_ with Heidegger. Of course when
Americans took up "theory" (unless they studied French intellectual
history as carefully as Ragan proceeded to do) they simply took the term
withoug subjecting it to any analysis.
