Not official Catholic doctrine (like the creed or the major decisions of ecumenical councils) but "social teaching," subject to much debate within the church then and subsequently. Unlike doctrine, it was regularly and explicitly modified every generation since Rerum novarum (the title means "new things") was published in 1891:

1931: Quadragesimo anno (Pius XI)

1961: Mater et magistra (John XXIII)

1991: Centesimus annus (John Paul II)

With the collapse of official Marxism-Leninism and the growth of Liberation Theology among the increasing number of Catholics in what used to be called the Third World, while neoliberalism grew in the developed world, Catholicism might be seen ca. 2000 as the largest body of anti-capitalist thought in the world -- followed perhaps by Islam... --CGE
