Lenin's was doing a "holding action" waiting for revolution to spark in the
West. He made the mistake of equating state capitalism made to benefit the
people with socialism, but given the conditions of 1917, the war, famine and
the utter destruction of much of Russia I think he can be forgiven for
trying to centralize power.
Obviously history hasn't been so kind to him---- I recently read The
Bolsheviks and Workers Control and it did change my view of a lot of
left-leninists that emphasize the libertarian socialist ideas in Lenin's
works (State and Revolution) and the early Russian Revolution.
