Even from a narrow capitalist perspective, the Chinese authorities are @#&$% bird-brained to think that China's becoming a mass automobiling society is compatible with China's becoming a hegemonic world leader... every time I read a report like this, my first reaction is how misled Giovanni Arrighi is.
