The British voted decisively for socialism in 1945, and despite uninterrupted and increasing betrayals by the Laborites (new and old) the Tories have never won a majority vote. Socialism was very popular in the US during the decades around the turn of the century and it took all-out state repression to reduce it to a "tolerable" minority status in the 1920's and thereafter.
