This might have something to do with the new lp, which I haven't heard, because SY hasn't really interested me for a while (for me, the last great SY lp was Daydream Nation), but even those grunge era lps and later oddball pop lps (the later 90's) are fairly contemporary works, and, if anything, far less nostalgic than a lot of the popular work occurring during those periods. I would certainly accept that the earlier work often acted as a populizer (sic) of the work of no-wave artists such as Mars, Branca, etc., but I don't see why that is a problem. They're pretty good records (okay... really good records)
To be frank, the k-punk review didn't make much sense to me at all.

p.s. actually the accusation of sy acting as 'curators' does make sense,
and seems to be a pretty good description of the later SY
....
