This is my whole point. The role of the Democratic Party in American politics is not a "fundamental assumption." It's closer to being an "ultimate conclusion." I wouldn't waste my time arguing about abortion with a fundamentalist because, yes, in that case all the fundamental assumptions - cosmological, metaphysical, espistemological - really are too different for a productive or enjoyable debate. But if you can't have a constructive exchange of views with someone who has a different view of the behavior of US political parties then your idea of political discussion seems to be confined to hashing over the best vocal inflections for your favorite slogan-chants.
