Murphy and Brenner make some solid points, but I'd note there's a missing link in their analysis: they confine themselves almost entirely to neoliberal accumulation in the US-EU-Japan, with an occasional nod to East Asia (S Korea and coastal China's export economy).
But things are more complicated -- and hopeful -- than that. The global semi-periphery (residence of two-thirds of humanity) has generated an extraordinary array of developmental states, which continue to evolve at remarkable speed. They have vast resources and are now beginning to consume larger chunks of their own surplus. The BRICs in particular are spending heavily on renewable energy, nanotechnology, aerospace, telecommunications and healthcare.
