I think even in Eisenhower's administration, when the Middle EAst poli
did directly serve oil companies, that was secondary to what has for 60
years been unbroken U.S. eforts to _control_ world oil resources. And it
was never even for _immediate_ use of that power but from long-range
considerations of the gepolitical significvance of that control. Oil
profits were undoubtefly a welcom side effect, but they were a side
effect, not vital. Focus on access or profits is reminiscent of MR focus
on titanium during the Vietnam War.

P.S. Sometime in the early 20th C. someone wrote a book entitled, _Oil
for the Lamps of China_ Does anyone know what that book was about?
