I think the point is, in fact I know the point is since I was making it, that the moral superiority of x cannot be determined relative to those of x - 1 and x + 1 simply by looking at the opinions of x. Carrol is actually rather schizophrenic on this, because he uses majority opinion as his moral criterion in cases when it suits him (like eating meat) but ignores it when it does not (like being a communist).
