Actually, I've had that reaction vis-a-vis the US since about 1999 or so.
It was somehow the feeling of the sheer unsustainability of the US Empire,
the intuition that it was all just tinsel and smoke machines and financial
bubbles and decaying infrastructure. Which, of course, it was.
