I've only browsed in this thread, but a curiosity from what I've seen of it; it is as though in listing 'great' poets in English the earlierst poet mentioned was Browning! What about the great films from the first four or five decades of film making.

Some great shorts from the 1910s (e.g., Mack Sennet). Birth of a Nation. Cabinet of Kr. Kaligari (sp?), some great French films from the '30s whose titles I forget. The Baker's Wife. The first Frankenstein movie. The General (Buster Keaton). Paisan. Bicycle Thief. Mr. Hulot's Holiday. Several Marx Brothers films. A couple of Mae West films. The Stone Flower. Ivan the Terrible. Alexander Nevsky.
