While I think SS has Charisse's best performance as 
an actress and wonderful dancing, it has always 
looked to me like a sweet Academy ratio film lost 
in a sea of 2:35.

Neither Mamoulian nor Astaire liked widescreen ,and 
the frequent deployment of a dancer or piece of furniture 
on either side of the screen as filler only draws attention 
to their uncomfortableness.
