The CCF did promote co-operatives in Canada. In fact provinces such as Saskatchewan and Manitoba that have had CCF or its successor NDP govts. usually have a Dept of Co-operatives. In the financial sector Credit Unions (Caisse Populaires in Quebec) were and are still promoted.
In Manitoba and Saskatchewan in most small towns the main or only retail business will be a co-operative store often including a gas station or fuel supply depot and the only financial institution will be a credit union. There is also a wholesaler to supply all the Co-ops and also a Co-op refinery in Regina that is expanding that supplies the gas station chain.
