[Someone posted this to my Yale Class of '75 listserv. He'd just attended a meeting in a mid-sized Southern city with the mayor and 100 local worthies.]

Aside from the very impressive public/private organization that is being put in place here (and, I hope and believe, in cities and states everywhere) the most encouraging take-away from this meeting was the mayor's statement that, "We are getting three or so e-mails per day from the White House about the implementation of this bill, about transparency and accountability requirements, and about how this needs to work. The White House is incredibly well organized and productive, responsive and helpful. They understand what cities and states are going through -- and what we need on this end to make this work."

...

In addition to the infrastructure, the tax breaks and the Pell Grant increases, there is help for social services, homelessness prevention, extended unemployment benefits, SSI help and job retraining because all those needs are increasing fast.
