Dear Friends,

American Folklore Society Past President Bill Ivey, director of the Curb Center for Art, Enterprise, and Public Policy at Vanderbilt University, and chair of the National Endowment for the Arts from 1998 to 2001, has been appointed to lead the Obama transition team with responsibility for the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

As is customary in these situations, Bill has resigned his seat on the AFS Executive Board in order to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest.

I know you will join with all of us on the Board to congratulate him on this new challenge--which he certainly is the best person to undertake--and to thank him for his creative and energetic leadership of the Board, the Society, and the field.

Sincerely, Elaine Lawless, AFS President
