> John Mortimer, the famous British barrister
> and author, best known in the US as the
> creator of Horace Rumpole.
Mortimer was the main defence lawyer for Oz magazine in an early 1970s court case in the UK. The three editors were accused of obscenity and one of Mortimer's main defence witnesses was the comedian Marty Feldman. The "Oz Three" (it was originally an Australian publication) were found guilty but freed on appeal. One of the "Oz Three", Felix Dennis, has become one of the wealthiest men in the UK through ownership of his publishing empire. Last year Dennis achieved notoriety through a newspaper interview where he claimed to have murdered a man 25 years earlier. Dennis later claimed that he was drunk at the time and the story was made up, but The Times newspaper still stands by its story.
