Iirc, IBM's rent-seeking during the 20th century's second depression was/is a huge contributor to their current sales push to feed at the trough [smart infrastructure blather with those annoying banner ads on way too many websites]; kinda like Francis Drake's plunder tour of the planet way back got the once mighty corporation called Great Britain going....
