That is a big thread running through philosopher John Gray's work. _Straw Dogs_ & _Black Mass: Apocalyptic Religion and the Death of Utopia_.

I forget who extended the analogy even further by painting Lenin as the equivalent of Paul/Saul of Tarsus, which perversely makes some sense.
