By "patriarchy" I don't just mean "men get a better deal than women." Punishing adulterers whether by stoning or social sanction is necessary to a complex set of social relations instantiated in the marriage contract. As you increase the power of the state and market, these decrease in importance, but even in the highest-income countries the family is a materially significant institution.
