Incidentally, do you know anything at all about, or have ever heard of, Chuvash, Kalmyks, Buryats, Cossacks, Tyvans, or Bashkirs? If the answer is "no," you have no business talking about politics in the former USSR.
Alas, few people writing for the New York Times etc. have ever heard of these peoples. 95% of them have never even heard of Tatars.
